Admitted to the Bar in 1985. Criminal Defence Barrister for over 25yrs
I offer an uncompromising defence of your interests at whatever level the charge.
My experience is broad and successful ranging from the Court of Appeal, High Court and District Court.
I have been involved in successful acquittals on charges of Murder, Class A, B and C drug trials including Manufacturing and Supply charges and large Electronic Operations, Fraud, Tax, Transport, Customs, Firearms and all manner of criminal prosecutions.
Recent successes in the Court of Appeal include R v Williams (The leading case on Search and Seizure), R v O'Hara, R v Ali'imatafitafi and R v Hill (Leading case on Home Detention as a Sentence).
I prefer Solicitor instructions but am available to take on all categories of legal aid work, however, legal aid is not generally available for cases where imprisonment is unlikely unless there are some complicating factors.
I will meet with you at the earliest opportunity to discuss the conduct of your case and am always available to meet and talk about your case by appointment. I understand that facing a criminal prosecution is a journey into the unknown for many people and their supporters. I will always take time to explain the necessary steps to obtain the fairest and most just result for every client.
My work also includes civil and administrative law cases.

In 2006 I commenced practise as a lawyer, after having spent many years working as a Forensic Scientist specialising in crime scene examinations, DNA and forensic evidence. Since 2006, as a lawyer, I have worked in the criminal courts on a wide range of cases. I seem to be the only criminal lawyer in New Zealand who has also been a practising forensic scientist, so this gives me a unique ability to quickly review cases and forensic evidence to your benefit.
When I became a lawyer, I spent 8 years as a Crown prosecutor at Meredith Connell. This means that I appeared regularly in the courts on serious criminal matters. After that, I moved to WorkSafe New Zealand as their Principal Advisor – Litigation. I spent 4 years specialising in Health and Safety law, and was involved in over 350 health and safety cases many of which were high profile matters. This included appearing on the High Court’s guideline sentencing decision for health and safety cases.
I then became a Barrister and joined Vulcan Chambers on 1 October 2018 where I am available for instructions for private, regulatory, criminal law and Legal Aid matters. I am also available to appear at Coronial inquests.
Being charged with an offence is a stressful and difficult time. With my background I can assure you of a thorough assessment of the evidence in our case, with attention to the small details that are so easily overlooked before representing you in Court. I look forward to working with you to get the best outcome possible for whatever situation you find yourself.

I have over 40 years experience in representing defendants. I have always believed that no matter what may be alleged against you there is an entitlement to representation and have someone speak on your behalf, someone who understands your situation and is sympathetic to your needs.
I am comfortable in any jurisdiction and the satisfaction for me is in doing a good job and achieving a fair result. I am not motivated by money and I certainly won't make extra ordinary promises that are unrealistic or impossible.
I look for the challenge and I have the experience and the will to do well for you. I welcome work on Legal Aid which is my preference.
I am but a telephone call away.

In the course of over 45 years as a barrister has appeared in a very large number of cases in areas as diverse as franchise agreements, community titles existing within the Torrens title system, misrepresentation on the sale of businesses, actions between financial services providers and the Financial Ombudsman Service, claims for prerogative relief in the Superior Courts of Australia and New Zealand, constitutional law and a specific constitutional case in the Court of Appeal of New Zealand where the Court held it had the power to discharge a criminal indictment because of abuse of process by the executive, a decision that overturned nearly 200 years authority to the contrary, this case subsequently being followed and expressly approved by the House of Lords. Has also argued choice of law/conflict of law issues in appellate courts in a number of leading cases and important issues of insurance law.
